Our Group
1st Faversham (Wheler’s Own) Scout Group is one of the oldest scout groups in the world having been founded in 1908. Over the decades we have continued our association with the Wheler family and lately the Wheler Foundation, allowing us to use the extensive facilities at Otterden Place for camping and other activities. Each of our sections meets at Shepherd Park just off the A251 south of Faversham, where we have access to safe and secure fields and woodland for outdoor activities, as well as a large hall.
In addition to a full programme of section activities we also run numerous group wide events throughout the year, enabling the different age ranges to mix and get to know each other, fostering teamwork and building leadership skills for the older sections. Our annual Family Camp in May is the highlight of the Group’s year, with all sections and their families invited, it’s a fun filled bank holiday weekend for over 120 people. During the year we also run Pool Parties and trips to a local panto for all sections.
Fundraising
Our Group prides itself on its food, whether it’s bacon rolls or cakes there’s always plenty to enjoy at one of our fundraising events! You’ll see us at the Faversham Bike Ride, Sheldwich Fete, Sheldwich Fireworks and other local events throughout the year. Every four years we attend the Kent International Jamboree and run the Tasty Bits Tearoom for a week - all based out of our converted horsebox kitchen!

Our Team
In addition to the teams you’ll see running our section meetings, we have numerous adults behind the scenes making up our Group Leadership Team and Trustee Board.
The Group Leadership Team exists to:
- Make sure the Group’s sections are supported.
- Ensure Volunteers in the group can develop and share skills
- Ensure the group is positively engaging with the local community
- Make sure effective processes for finance, joining enquires etc are well managed.
The Group Trustee Board exists to make sure the Group:
- Manages money well
- Follows Scouts policies and relevant legislation
- Looks after buildings, insurance and property
- Manages risks
- Helps the charity to operate well today and in the future
Some of the key volunteers in our group are:
- Group Chairman - David Kirsch-Mills
- Group Treasurer - Michael Moore
- Group Lead Volunteer - Sharon Beale
- Group Trustee Board Administrator - Lynn Moore
Volunteer
Our group couldn't run without our adult volunteers; from lead volunteers, occasional helpers, group trustees and more, there are many ways to get involved.
We think flexibility is key; if you can help every week, GREAT! But even if you can only chip in from time to time, that's still really great too! Please contact us if you’d like to get involved.
